Anarchism in America

A colorful and provocative survey of anarchism in America, the film attempts to dispel popular misconceptions and trace the historical development of the movement. The film explores the movement both as a native American philosophy stemming from 19th century American traditions of individualism, and as a foreign ideology brought to America by immigrants. The film features rare archival footage and interviews with significant personalities in anarchist history including Murray Boochkin and Karl Hess, and also live performance footage of the Dead Kennedys.

Angry Brigade, the

The Angry Brigade var – helt kort – en militant aktivistisk gruppe (som i dag med sikkerhed ville blive kaldt terrorister), der sidst i 1960′erne og først i 70′erne rettede en del bombeanslag eller snarere forsøg derpå mod forskellige britiske stats- og kapitalinteresser. Uden personskader, men altså alligevel…..

Interessant er, at hvor fx RAF i Tyskland og De røde Brigader i Italien havde et svært dogmatisk marxistisk-leninistisk afsæt (hvilket nok til dels kan forklare den temmelig hensynsløse strategi, de nævnte grupper anlagde), havde The Angry Brigade mere sin inspiration fra de franske situationister, der fyldte en del i 1968, og spanske anarkister, veteraner fra borgerkrigen og nu eksilerede på flugt fra Francos dktatur. Det afspejlede sig tilsynelandendde også i strategien.

The Angry Brigade (og den omtrent samtidige 1. maj gruppe) og deres meritter druknede siden i de angreb som IRA fra lidt op i 1970′erne satte ind. Men her er chancen for en revival på film.

Dokumentaren "The Angry Brigade" giver et godt og tidstæt billede af det venstreorienterede miljø i England for dér omkring 40 år siden. Filmen er fra 1974, hvillet i sammenhængen er en styrke, fordi filmen dermed kan vise og interviewe gruppen, mens den stadig var aktiv – og på fri fod.

Giver dog et kort overblik over sagen og er dermed en okay indflyvning til den ‘rigtige’ film "The Angry Brigade".

The movie takes an in-depth look at characters during those five days in 1999 as demonstrators protested the meeting of the WTO in Seattle’s streets. Although it began as a peaceful protest with a goal of stopping the WTO talks, it escalated into a full-scale riot and eventually, a State of Emergency that pitted protesters against the Seattle Police Department and the National Guard.

Filmen ‘BZ’ om bz-ernes historie fra 1981-1986 er meget professionelt og ærligt lavet, og skabte jubelråb og konstante klapsalver, da den torsdag aften blev vist på storskærm udendørs i hjertet af bz`ernes historiske udgangspunkt Nørrebro i København. Filmen, der er lavet af Helle Hansen fører os ikke igennem bz-bevægelsens historie kronologisk. Den krydsklipper primært mellem årene 1981, 1986, 1982, som er mærkeår i historien om husbesættelser i det årti. Gennem interviews med tre hovedpersoner, der var med hele vejen siden Ini`tiv-gruppen for et ungdomshus blev dannet BZ i 1981, fortælles historien om op- og nedture, rydninger og gadekampe. men også om hverdagslivet i kollektiverne, kærligheden og friheden. Vi får enestående billeder af besættelsen af Rutana og Schiønning og Arvè. Og store klapsalver fik et klip, hvor vi fulgte beboerne i det besatte hus Allotria på Nørrebro, som snød 800 betjente ved at undslippe gennem en tunnel under vejen.

Filmholdet følger dagligdagen i Børnehuset i Sankt Peders Stræde i København, et hus for unge, hvoraf mange har rødder i det autonome miljø. Det males og tømres, der planlægges politiske aktioner og der diskuteres: Kønsroller, EU, racisme, bilfri by, hash, alkohol, osv. Beslutninger tages på demokratisk vis. Corporation, the

The film charts the development of the corporation as a legal entity from its origins as an institution chartered by governments to carry out specific public functions, to the rise of the vast modern institutions entitled to some of the legal rights of a person. One central theme of the documentary is an attempt to assess the “personality” of the corporate “person” by using diagnostic criteria from the DSM-IV; Robert Hare, a University of British Columbia Psychology Professor and FBI consultant, compares the profile of the modern, profit-driven corporation to that of a clinically-diagnosed psychopath. The film focuses mostly on corporations in North America, especially in the United States.

The film is composed of several vignettes examining and critiquing corporate practices, and drawing parallels between examples of corporate malfeasance and the DSM-IV’s symptoms of psychopathy, i.e. callous unconcern for the feelings of others, incapacity to maintain enduring relationships, reckless disregard for the safety of others, deceitfulness (repeated lying to and deceiving of others for profit), incapacity to experience guilt, and failure to conform to the social norms with respect to lawful behaviors.

Det Blå Hus: BZ 2003

Når man siger BZ, vil de fleste nok tænke på80érne. Men BZ tanken lever endnu. I april 2002 BZátte en gruppe unge et hus på Åboulevarden i København og de fik lov til at blive boende i et helt år, hvilket er meget usædvanligt i Danmark. Filmen videreformidler unges holdninger og meninger i en verden hvor pressens focus kun er på dem hvis de laver gadekampe.

Det Røde Kapel

Danske komikere indtager Nordkorea: Hvad sker der, når to dansk-koreanske komikere rejser til Nordkorea for at opføre et absurd teaterstykke? Det kan man få svar på i DR2s nye serie ‘Det røde kapel’ – en på alle måder sjælden rejse ind i det lukkede og berygtede nordkoreanske diktatur.

Nordkoreas 23 millioner borgere styres med hård hånd af Den Kære Leder, general Kim Jong Il. Mellem 150.000 og 200.000 mennesker sidder i fangelejre og i løbet af 1990’erne sultede flere millioner mennesker ihjel, fordi landets økonomi ligger i ruiner. Ifølge FN forsømmer Nordkorea at overholde en lang række basale menneskerettigheder, og har f.eks. tradition for at mishandle handicappede og internere dem i koncentrationslejre under umenneskelige forhold.

Ind i dette inferno af undertrykkelse og censur rejser komikerne Simon Jul og Jacob Nossell – alias teatertruppen ‘Det røde kapel’. Simon Jul er kendt fra ‘Banjos Likørstue’ og reklamer for Sonofon og Toyota, mens den 18-årige Jacob Nossell er ved at få gang i en karriere som stand-up komiker. Nossell er spastiker, men optræder jævnligt på Comedy Zoo i København og går desuden i gymnasiet. Både Simon Jul og Jacob Nossell er adopteret fra Korea, og ingen af dem havde været i landet, siden de blev hentet til Danmark som spædbørn. Dette er deres første møde med den verden, de kommer fra.

Fru Kristoff og censuren
Seriens fire afsnit skildrer, hvordan dette usædvanlige møde mellem teatertruppen ‘Det røde kapel’ og nordkoreanerne udvikler sig. Efter de to komikere har afholdt en mislykket generalprøve for censurkomiteen i Pyongyang, tager en nordkoreansk teaterinstruktør over og piller deres show fuldstændig fra hinanden.
Deres version af ‘Prinsessen på ærten’, sangen ‘Jutlandia’ og mange andre elementer falder for censuren, og det eneste, som overlever, er en pastiche på sketchen ‘Fru Kristoff’, som de to komikere øvede med Tommy Kenter og Per Pallesen før afrejsen. Samtidig forsøger de koreanske teaterfolk i stigende grad at gøre Jacobs handicap usynligt for publikum.

Ironi i overvågningssamfundet
Når de ikke øver teater, rejser Jul og Nossell rundt i landet og besøger blandt andet Den Demilitariserede Zone, verdens mest højspændte grænseområde, hvor Nordkorea og Sydkorea har linet alt deres militære isenkram op.

Produktionen blev til på den betingelse, at nordkoreanerne løbende fik alle bånd til gennemsyn og godkendelse, men eftersom ingen rigtig forstod hverken dansk eller komikernes sarkasme og ironi, slap tv-holdet fra projektet med alle bånd i god behold.

‘Det Røde Kapel’ er en bizar fortælling om mødet mellem det frie sind og det totale overvågningssamfund. Det er også en beretning om to unge mænds møde med deres biologiske rødder, og deres forsøg på at fungere i en verden, hvor humor og menneskelighed har meget trænge kår.

Titlen ‘Det Røde Kapel’ er en reference til en kommunistisk spioncelle, som opererede i Nazityskland under navnet ‘Rote Kapelle’.

Emma Goldman – American Experience

On a cold December morning in 1919, just after midnight, Emma Goldman, her comrade Alexander Berkman, and more than 200 other foreign-born radicals were roused from their Ellis Island dormitory beds to begin their journey out of the United States for good.

Convicted of obstructing the draft during World War I, Goldman’s expatriation came 34 years after she had first set foot in America, a young, brilliant, Russian immigrant. For more than three decades, she taunted mainstream America with her outspoken attacks on government, big business and war.

Goldman’s passionate espousal of radical causes made her the target of persecution. Her sympathy for Leon Czolgosz, the assassin of President McKinley, brought down upon her the hatred of the authorities and the public at large. Feared as a sponsor of anarchy and revolution, she was vilified in the press as “Red Emma,” “Queen of the Anarchists,” and “the most dangerous woman in America.”

Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm uses video footage shot by the police to confirm how the police target citizens engaged in constitutionally protected acts of protest for harassment, assault, and arrest. The police, by their own admission, assault law-abiding protesters without provocation then lie about being provoked. These lies were carried and repeated ad-nauseum by the corporate media without any regard for the truth. The corporate media is shown being complicit in, and even supportive of, flagrant police misconduct. Those perceived as “leaders” by the police are often singled out for surveillance, assault, and arrest regardless of the fact that those individuals have broken no laws and committed no crimes. The police kept this footage despite laws prohibiting the collection of information on individuals engaged in political dissent. The police stated that activist video footage only told one “side” of the story, now everyone can see the other “side”.

I Uge 19 Går Vi Te’ Den

Den 7. maj 1988 starter en aktionsuge med navnet “Uge 19 går vi te den” med demonstrationer og “gang i gaden”. Noget af det mest spektakulære er bz´ere forklædt som Daltonbrødrene (kendt fra Lucky Luke-tegneserierne), der bl.a. kravler ind i Blegdamsvejens Fængsel og vælter “S” i Shell på Shell-husets tag (så der i stedet står “hell”, dvs Helvede). I Teglgårdsstræde bliver mange bz`ere anholdt, og politiet bruger stavene meget voldsomt.

Racist skinheads: with their shaved heads, tattooed bodies and violent culture have always stayed on the fringe of society. But today, many racist skinheads are discarding the outward trappings of the culture, to spread a message targeted at mainstream society. And they are using the internet, a growing musical scene,a nd political issues to attract new members. These tactics are paying off. The number of racist skinheads in the united states has grown to an estimated 5,000 in 2001 into 10,000 in 2007. This documentary from National Geographic channel takes an in debth ‘behind the scenes’ look into America’s skinhead culture. I’ll be watching this as I am curious to see whether the american media has fuelled this type of behaviour due to fear mongering of the stereotypical terrorist images. Very well made and complete documentary in only 43 minutes. En god dokumentar om hvordan den nazitiske bevægelse i USA udvikler sig i øjeblikket, samt at man får et syn på nogle af de mord der er blevet begået af nazi skinheads på grund af “White Pride”.

Jesus Camp

Land And Freedom

The film’s narrative unfolds in a long flashback. David Carr has died at an old age and his granddaughter discovers old letters, newspapers and other documents in his room: what we see in the film is what he had lived.

Persuaded of the necessity of helping the Spanish Republicans in their fight against the fascist Nationalist insurgence, Carr, a young unemployed worker and member of the Communist Party, leaves Liverpool and travels to Spain to join the International Brigades. He crosses the Catalan border and casually ends up enlisted in a POUM militia commanded by Lawrence, in the Aragon front. In this company, as in all POUM militias, men and women — such as the young and enthusiastic Maite — fight together. In the following weeks and months he becomes friends with other foreign volunteers, like the French Bernard, and he falls in love with Blanca, a member of POUM, who is also the ideologue of his group.

After being wounded and recovering in a hospital in Barcelona, he finally joins — in accordance with his original plan and against the opinion of Blanca — the government-backed International Brigades, and he witnesses first-hand the Stalinist propaganda and repression against POUM members and anarchists; he then returns to his old company, only to see them rounded up by a government unit requiring their surrender: in a brief clash Blanca is killed. After her funeral he returns to Great Britain with a red neckerchief full of Spanish earth.

Finally the film comes back to the present, and we see Carr’s funeral, in which his granddaughter throws the Spanish earth into his grave after speaking lines from “The Day Is Coming”, a poem by William Morris. Afterwards she and the other family members perform a raised fist salute, honoring his beliefs and suggesting that his family might also hold them.

Fewer have discussed strategies with Che Guevara or saved the skin of Eldridge Cleaver, the leader of the Black
Panthers. There is only one who has done all that, and also brought to its knees the most powerful bank on the
planet by forging travellers cheques, without missing a single day of work in his construction job. He is Lucio
Urtubia, from a tiny village in Navarra in North of Spain. Lucio, 75, now lives in Paris, still raising anarchist
hell. Lucio has been protagonist and witness to many of the historic events of the second half of the 20th century.
His family was persecuted by Franco’s regime, he was on the streets of Paris for the phenomenon of May of ’68,
he actively supported Castro’s revolution, he helped thousands of exiled people by providing false documents to
them. But without a doubt, his greatest triumph came in the second half of the seventies. The press called him
“the good bandit”, or the Basque Zorro. He managed to swindle 25 million dollars from the First National Bank
(now Citibank), to later invest the money in causes he believed in. Miraculously, he spent no more than a few

Ni Dage Bag Barrikaderne

Slaget i Ryesgade-kvarteret i september 1986 er en af historiens mest direkte konfrontationer mellem ungdommen og de borgerlige magthavere. I ni dage holdt en gruppe unge stand imod en veludrustet politistyrke, en mudderkastende presse og en bred front af reaktionære politikere. I løbet af de ni dage præsterede de unge i BZ-bevægelsen og deres mange sympatisører, gang på gang at løbe om hjørner med Københavns Kommune. Det blev en kamp, der styrkede den revolutionære ungdomsbevægelse. Huset i Ryesgade 58 havde været en gruppe BZ’eres hjem igennem tre et halvt år. Tre et halvt år med endeløse forhandlinger med Københavns Kommune der i sidste ende førte til, at BZ’erne alligevel ikke fik lov til at beholde deres hjem. Den 14. september 1986 gav daværende overborgmester Egon Weidekamp ordre til at huset skulle rømmes. Svaret kom prompte: der blev oprettet barrikader i hele Ryesgade-kvarteret. De unge gav sig ikke uden kamp.

Blandt andet ransagning uden kendelse, zoneforbud og ikke mindst visitationer, der har karakter af sexchikane, hvor folk bliver befamlet på deres mest private dele i fuld offentlighed. I det hele taget er tonen rå og uforsonlig, når politiet færdes i fristaden. Filmen er således et systemkritisk portræt af dagens Danmark, som sætter fokus på retssikkerhed og demokrati, med udgangspunkt i Christianias hverdag.

Salt of the Earth

Tells the tale of a real life strike by Mexican-American miners. The story is set in a remote New Mexico town where the workers live in a company town in company owned shacks without basic plumbing. Put at risk by cost cutting bosses, the miners strike for safe working conditions. As the strike progresses the issues at stake grow beyond that, driven by the workers’ wives. At first the wives are patronized by the traditional patriarchical culture, however they assert themselves as equals and an integral part of the struggle, calling for improved sanitation and dignified treatment. Ultimately, when the bosses win a court order against the workers preventing them from demonstrating gender roles reverse with the wives taking over the picket line and preventing scab workers from being brought in while the husbands stay at home and take care of house and children.
